No - not an old public toilet.


As with much of Southampton, the modern High Street is built over the remains of much older buildings, many of which were destroyed during WW II.


The steps at the front of Oasis lead down to the Lankester Vault, built it is believed in the 14th Century and lying directly under our patio. The light coloured bricks on the patio pick out the location of the ribbed archways you can see in the photo.


The vault was probably built originally as a wine cellar - the house above was destroyed in the blitz but the occupants using it as a shelter survived.
